History of Tepoztlán
Tepoztlán has a rich history that dates back to pre-Hispanic times. The town is believed to have been founded by the Tepozteco people, an indigenous group who worshipped the Tepozteco mountain as a sacred site. In the 15th century, the Aztecs conquered the area and established the town as an important religious center. It was during this time that the famous Tepozteco pyramid was constructed on top of the mountain.
In 1521, the Spanish conquistadors arrived in Tepoztlán and brought Christianity to the town. The Tepozteco pyramid was converted into a chapel and dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Today, visitors can still climb the pyramid and see the chapel at the top.
During the colonial period, Tepoztlán became a center for agriculture and trade. The town was known for its production of sugarcane, corn, and other crops. Many of the historic buildings in Tepoztlán were constructed during this time, including the Church of the Nativity and the Municipal Palace.
